Reflections of the day

My Dear Friends, Last April 2nd was the birthday of one of the greatest freedom fighters of India. While we hail and idolize numerous freedom fighters of our country, it's indeed very disheartening that many of today's generation don’t even know who he is. I'm talking here about Varahaneri Venkatesa Subramaniam Aiyar or simply VVS Aiyar. First off, I'm hugely honored to have an opportunity to write this blog. Although, it may not suffice to write all about VVS Aiyar here, I'd glad be a firefly to emit a little light into the life of a selfless man named VVS Aiyar. Once in 2002, whilst in my college library I came across a book named ''The Maxims of Thiruvalluvar''. The first chapter I went through was on ''Friendship''. அன்பான நண்பர்களே!! இதயம் கனிந்த தமிழ்ப் புத்தாண்டு நல்வாழ்த்துகள். கடந்த ஏப்ரல் 2-ம் தேதி ஒரு பொன்னாள். இன்றைய இளைய தலைமுறை பலருக்குத் தெரியாத ஒரு உன்னதமான மனிதரின் பிறந்தநாள். அவர் தான் வரஹனேரி வேங்கடேச சுப்ரமணியம் ஐயர் (வ. வே.சு ஐயர்) அவர்கள். முதலில் அந்த மகானைப்  பற்றி எழுத வாய்ப்பு அமைந்தமைக்கு நான் இறைவனுக்கு நன்றியுரைக்கிறேன். நம் நாட்டுக்காக, நம்  நாட்டிலுள்ளோர் விடுதலைக்காக பாடுபட்ட தன்னலமில்லா தமிழர். தேச விடுதலைக்காக உழைத்த எண்ணற்ற தியாகிகளை நாம் நினைவு கொண்டாலும் வ. வே.சு ஐயரின் தியாகமும் அவரது சுதந்திர வேட்கையும் நம்மில் பலருக்குத் தெரியாமலிருப்பது என் மனதை வேதனையடையச் செய்கிறது. அவரைப் குறித்து எழுத இக்கட்டுரை போதாதெனினும் இருளில் ஒரு மின்மினிப்பூச்சித் தரக்கூடிய அளவேனும் அவர் குறித்து ஒளியைத் தருவது என் தலையாயப் பணியாகும். ஒரு சமயம் கல்லூரி நூலகத்தில் திருக்குறள் ஆங்கில மொழிப் பெயர்ப்பு புத்தகம் ஒன்றை நான் பார்க்க நேர்ந்தது. முதலில் ஆர்வமில்லாமல் எடுத்து படித்தேன். நான் படித்த முதல் அதிகாரம் நட்பு. அதிலுள்ள ஒவ்வொரு குறளின்...

Today I read Edgar Lee Masters' Spoon River Anthology. As you may know, it is a collection of poems each written from the perspective of a dead inhabitant of the fictitious town Spoon River.  The inhabitants reflect on their lives, the bitter twists of fate and fortune, the ironies, the regrets, even the nature of the tombstones and burial plots beneath they now rest. It’s a great collection and a pleasure to read. And did you know Edgar Lee Masters had a turbulent life. He suffered many disappointments in love during his life, buy kept looking for a woman who could ease his lifelong loneliness.  In his autobiography, Across Spoon River, he wrote, ‘’Lovers who pass from our lives are more pathetic than the dead, for departed lovers are those who are buried alive. They are somewhere yet in the world, reminding us of hopes that failed, of dreams that were misled’’. Carpe Diem, MJ
